Anyone who desires to lead others must first be a good
leader of his own self or life. To govern yourself, you must first govern your
heart: that is you must learn to listen to the spirit within you. The secret of
leadership is how you respond to things around you. The following explains the
characteristics of a self-governed individual…
Learn to listen to your heart:
in times of darkness in your life, learn to be quiet when trouble comes. Don’t
let circumstances define your life or even speak to you…rather obey the voice
in your heart. In the face of adversity, the leader of Israel, Moses, uttered
the words “And Moses said to the
people, do not be afraid. Stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord, which
He will accomplish for you to. For the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall
see again no more forever.” Exo 14:13 The Israelite were before the red
sea whiles the Egyptians were approaching them but Moses their leader learn to
listen to the spirit of his heart and took a good decision.
Govern your thoughts:
A self-governed person learns to control the ideas or thoughts that controls
them. “For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for
the pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that
exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into
captivity to the obedience of Christ.” 2Cor 10:4-5. A mental
stronghold is the idea that strongly controls and influence you. Most marriage
problems are mental—a stronghold of insecurity and distrust caused marriages to
fail. Poverty is a mental problem and not money problem. When you overcome the
stronghold in your mind that poverty is not an option but a choice, you will
eventually break loose from this stronghold.
Govern your words:
Words are important element in our life. “The tongue of the wise uses
knowledge rightly, but the mouth of fools pours forth foolishness.” Pro
15:2 life is built on words; relationships are built on words, we build trust
on words, we make friends with our words, we break people’s heart with our
words, we build our marriages with our words. Learn to control your words
because of its enormous power. “A man has joy by the answer of his mouth, and a
word spoken in due season, how good it is.” Pro 15:23
Be self-controlled:
to be a self-governed person, you must learn to control your flesh. One of the
greatest battle we all face is the battle against the flesh. The will of the
flesh is ‘satisfaction’ “I want this! I want that!” that is the voice of the
flesh. But in all we have to learn how to keep our flesh under subjection
“But I discipline my body and bring to subjection, lest when I have preached to
others, I myself should become disqualified.” 1Cor 9:27 Meaning it
is possible to control yourself from the lust and desires of this world! Paul
overcame the flesh and we can also do same if we are determined and discipline.
“And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passion and
desires.” Gal 5:24
