“Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember
you have within you the strength, the patience and the passion to reach for the
stars to change the world.” Hamet Tubman
In some point in our lives we experience disappointment
and setbacks to the extent that we conclude on our predicament and accept it as
fate. This is what kills most dreams. Accepting the negative situation you find
yourself and basing your argument on that present situation to think the
impossible is a cognitive error.
One of the stories that inspires me a lot is Dr Tererai,
a Zimbabwe woman who at the age of 11 was forced into marriage in exchange for
a cow. Tererai recounted that in her village girls weren’t allow to go to
school; it is only the boys who are given the privilege to attend school. At
age 18, Tererai is already a mother with four children. In 1991, a woman from
the US visited her village and asked her about her dream in life and
surprisingly, Tererai answered “I want to go to America, get a Bachelor’s
degree, a masters and probably a PhD” So I am asking, what’s your dream?
Though Tererai was an illiterate and a mother of four but
she wasn’t bothered. She didn’t look at her environment and the challenges that
confront her to give up on dreams. She believes in the beauty of her dreams!
And what happen to her? Well keep reading…
It took Tererai 8 years to complete her GED; a
certificate similar to diploma. She wrote her final exams but failed. She tried
again and failed the second time but she didn’t give up; she tried the third
time and she passed. That is the attitude of a dreamer; believing in your
dreams even if no one does.
The hope and believe in your dreams is what
will propel you to achieve your dream.
You are not too late to achieve your dreams! Because
Tererai finish senior high school at the age of 26! So after passing her exams,
she gained admission to college in Oklahoma, US. Now you can see her dreams
unfolding gradually.
Notwithstanding, she was studying in college and at the
same time raising her four children by herself. To add salt to injury, she was
living in a trailer and has to search for food in trash cans in order to feed
her family. At the same she was working four different jobs to pay her tuition.
Unfortunately her husband became jealous of her and begun to abuse her physically.
As you live your life, understand that not all people around you will believe
in your dreams but never give up and move on. With so much hard work and
perseverance, she finally got her college degree and later on attain her
Doctorate degree after 6 years. So in all it took Tererai 20 years to achieve
her dreams. Your dream is possible.
Now Tererai has given back to society by building a
classroom block funded by Oprah Winfrey that has benefited about 6000 students
and most women in her village too have decided to educate themselves because of
Tererai’s story. If we want to describe Tererai, we say she is a professor, a
researcher on HIV AIDS, a motivational speaker, a consultant and a humanitarian
ambassador.
