What do you see when you look at this photo? Is the glass
half-full or half-empty? Most times, we tend to switch from seeing what’s
really there to focusing on what isn’t. Perspective is everything in life,
especially in your relationships. How you see things determine how you respond
to situations and conflicts when they arise.
So what perspective should we have? Without trying to impose my
ideologies on you, in my opinion, seeing the glass as half-full is a positive
perspective to have. I’ve seen things both ways and the difference is clear.
Having a ‘glass is
half-full’ perspective generally inspires optimism and fervor.
It encourages improvement and it helps us appreciate life and the people we
choose to spend life with more. Having a ‘glass is half-empty’ mentality
often leads to anxiety and a sense of loss, especially if the glass was once
full.
Perspective helps shape relationships. It mitigates escalating
situations and it exposes how we truly see each other. Most couples don’t
always see eye-to-eye all
the time, and that’s fine. But when our perspectives are in total opposite to
the dimension of our preconceived love for each other, conflicts will arise.
Simply put, when we respond to situations in our friendships/relationships by
being defensive or abrasive rather than responding with love and understanding,
then we’d totally be missing the point.
It’s okay to get it wrong sometimes, that’s what truly fosters
emotional growth. What’s not okay is when our perspective of life and love
totally differs to that of our partner’s. Can two walk together except they be
agreed?
