Years ago, the story of a young university student in
my country, Ghana, who took his own life made waves in the country with mixed
reactions. Eye witness reports had it
that the young man climbed onto the roof of one of the halls of residence and
threw himself down. Other students who
heard him fall with a thud only only met his corpse rushing out to his
rescue. Reason? A lady he was in love
with had ended the relationship!
Though brutal and imprudence, taking one’s own life
over a love relationship turned sour is not a new phenomenon. It has been
experienced over the ages the world over, with some individuals even going to
the extent of killing others in addition to themselves over a failed
relationship as bitterness, frustration and anger sets in.
This is what I call a foolish and selfish death.
The young man and all the others with similar death
histories didn’t consider the amount of love they enjoyed from family, friends
and other people.
There are two points in everyone’s life: The point of
birth and the point of death. What you
do between these two points determines how you would be remembered after you
are gone.
Some people have lived every short lives but the
impact they made during their short lives have lived on several generations
after their death because they lived for the right reasons.
“When you decide to live and die for a cause bigger than yourself and one that will make the world a better place, your life becomes an inspiration to several generations because your impact still lives on though you may be dead and gone.
Martin Luther King Jnr died at a young age of 39 but
his impact is still speaking today and the generations that will come after us
will still be inspired by his story.
It is thus not worth dying for an unworthy cause that
will only bring dishonor to your memory and to those who love you.
Decide to live a life that will bring honour to God
and to those who love you and have made sacrifices for you.
Learn to get over your present disappointment. Don’t die for a foolish cause. There is a great future and purpose to live
for. Generations are waiting for your
impact. Receive a new sense of purpose.
