7 LESSONS FROM THE CHESS GAME

Chess is one of the most intuitive and mind stimulating game in history. Every game has its own rules and chess is not an exception. It is a game that is based on intuition, decision making, and strategy. As a game there are so many lessons that can be learn from it:

Move with a purpose: the chess game is all about being strategic to capture your opponent king. Once you capture the king, the game is over. Any move should be geared towards checkmating the king in order to win the game.
In the same way, life is all about accomplishing your God-given purpose for your life.  What is purpose? Purpose is the original intent of your birth. In other words what you are predestined to do in life. Jesus’s purpose was to redeem humanity from their sins and to reconcile us to God. “Nothing matters more than knowing the purpose of God for your life.” Rick Warren

Plan your move: chess is a game of the mind so you need to think critically before you make a move. Similarly anything that you intend to do, think and plan first; think and plan about your day, think and plan about your career, think and plan about your schooling, think and plan about your relationship and marriage. In fact anything that you intend to do think and plan first lest you mess up things.

Have a strategy in mind (PLAN B): The whole focus of the game is to capture your opponent king in what they call ‘checkmate’. In the same way have a strategy in whatever you do…being it business or ministry or marriage and many more.
Always have another plan to the already existing idea in your business, a strategy in your relationship, a strategy in your marriage, and strategy in all that you do and you will break boundaries.

Use all the pieces on the chess board: on the chess board are 32 pieces of chess characters and these characters have their own role in the game. The pawn has its role, the knight has it role, and the bishop has its own role so as the rook and the queen herself. In the same way, God has deposited in each of us talents and potentials. God deposited these potentials for us to unearth the potential and be a blessing to others.

One move can make you win or lose: yes I said earlier chess is a game of the mind- you have to calculate your move in order not to be ambushed by your opponent. Similarly, life is also about choices. You determine what to eat or what to wear, when to sleep and when to wake. In fact you determine the outcome of everything you do in your life. Inasmuch a bad decision can ruin your life, a good decision too can make your life beautiful. Wherever you are today is as a result of a decision you took some time back. Good decision can impact positively in your life and even the whole nation. So be mindful and critical about the decisions you take today.

Don’t underestimate your opponent: Don’t underestimate your opponent even if victory is at hand. In a chess game if you make one wrong move your opponent will take advantage of your mistake and ‘checkmate’ your king… that is a game over. In the same way, just like football, it is not over until the final whistle is blown. You may be ahead in the first 10 minute but at the end of the game you may be the looser. We witnessed some greatest comeback in the history of football i.e. [BARCELONA  VS PSG.]

One of the wisdom keys you must keep in your head is ‘never underestimate anyone in life.' The downfall of a man is not the end of his life. Things may be tough and rough today but time changes! There is no condition that is permanent so treat people with respect because they could be your boss someday. Inasmuch as there is life, there is still hope for the future.

Sometimes you lose: When it comes to games: chess, scrabble, monopoly, cards, checkers and many more, sometimes you win and other time you lose even though you may play your cards well.

In the same manner, when you achieve something significant in life, celebrate your success for that achievement. Celebration is a way of motivating your spirit to achieve greater things. While celebrating, remember not to be content or be mediocre with the achievement, strive to do more. Aim for excellence because the sky is just the starting point.

Also when you lose, be content with it. See it as a blessing because failures in life are part of success. When you fail at something, don’t just throw in the towel… see it as an opportunity to learn from it and be wiser than you use to be yesterday. Always remember that failures are part of success and not the opposite.
