“Death and life are in the power of the
tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit”
Proverbs 18:21
The tongue is the most powerful member among our members.
The tongue in James 3, was likened to a fire that has power to set a whole
forest in flames. The tongue has power to bless and curse.
There are so many things we can change in our life:
gadget, electronics, partners, clothes, attitude and many more but there is one
thing we can’t change in our life; that is the power of words. Words carries so
much power. Words once spoken cannot be retrieve back. It hang in the
atmosphere and echoes back to you at the right time.
Your words are like raw materials that is used to build
your life. Your tongue (words) determines what God will do with you. In other
words your destiny is at the mercy of your tongue. A typical example of the
power of the tongue is describe in Numbers 14; Moses sent spies to the
land of Canaan to spy the land that God has promised them but the negative
words of the spies and the whole Israel prevented them from entering the
promised land. These were the daily murmuring of the children of Israel:
“Nevertheless the people who dwell in the land are
strong, the cities are fortified and very large, moreover we saw descendant of
Anak there.” Num 13:28
“But the men who had gone up with them said,
we are not able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we.” Num
13:33
“Why has the Lord brought us to this land to
fall by the sword, that our wives and children should become victims? Would it
not be better for us to return to Egypt? “Num 14:3
As the children of Israel continue to speak these negative
words with their tongue, they never thought for a second the power of their
words. God has done so many miracles, signs and wonders among them yet they did
not believe that as He has promised to bring them into the land of Canaan, He
is able to fulfil His word so they sin against Him with their negative words
and God also reply:
“Say to them, as I live, says the Lord, just as you
have spoken in my hearing, so will I do to you. The carcasses of you who
have complained against Me shall fall in the wilderness, all of you were
numbered, according to your entire number, from 20 years old and above.” Num
14:28-29
So just as God has spoken so did it be! They all die except
Joshua and Caleb who entered the promise land. Their words destroy them.
Another potency of words is revealed in the book of
Joshua 6:26. When the Israelites collapse the wall of Jericho, Joshua uttered a
word against anyone who will rise to build the walls of Jericho;
“Cursed be the man
before the Lord who rises up and build this city Jericho; he shall lay
its foundation with his firstborn, and with his youngest he shall set up its
gates.” Josh 6:26
These words spoken by Joshua hung in the atmosphere for
approximately 600 years without anything happening in Jericho… then 1Kings
16:34 tells the rest of the story: “In his days Hiel of Bethel built
Jericho. He laid its foundation with his firstborn, and with his youngest son
Segub he set up its gates, according to the word of the Lord, which he had
spoken to Joshua the son of Nun.”
In a nutshell the sons of Hiel died as a
result of a curse spoken some 600 years ago because he decided to build the
walls of Jericho. This tells us that words don’t have an expiry date. What you
speak is what happens to you or what you speak is what you get.
Therefore let nothing evil proceed from your mouth: let
your words be positive always and you will enjoy its fruits.
