MY
FATHER, MY FATHER
“Honor your father and mother, which is the first
commandment with promise: That it may be well with you and you may live long on
the earth.” Eph 6:2-3
Fathers are the best gift that God has given to his
children. Aside bringing us into the world, it is their responsibility to guide,
mentor and protect us from harm but in most cases our fathers end up becoming
our number one enemy due to the fact that they in one way or the other might
have dealt badly with us or might have molested us or might have abandoned us
yet even for the sake of the above scripture, we have to let it go and make
peace with our fathers so that we may inherit a blessing.
THE
ESSENCE OF A FATHER
There are so many things we take for granted because of
our lack of understanding about the importance of a father figure in our lives.
God is our father in heaven but aside our heavenly father, our earthly
(biological) fathers’ also play a major role in our lives:
Fathers as counsellor’s & adviser’s: In
the book of proverbs, we discover how King Solomon was giving direction,
advices, and counselling to his sons: “My son, if you receive my word’s and
treasure my commands within you, so that you incline your ears to wisdom, and
apply your heart to understanding;” Pro 2:1-2 Every good father will teach
their children so many things about life secret, marriage tips, business and
investment, courses to choose when applying to go to college, and good morals. In
Pro 3:9-10, Solomon reveal to his sons the secret for abundance and wealth
creation: “Honor the Lord with your possessions, and with the firstfruits of
all your increase; So your barns will be filled with plenty and your vats will
overflow with new wine.” This is the essence of a good father.
Father’s as mentors and visionary: A
good father is also a good mentor and a life coach to his children. “Then
Isaac called Jacob and blessed him, and charged him, and said to him: You shall
not take a wife from the daughters of Canaan. Arise, go to Padan Aram, to the
house of Bethuel your mother’s father; and take yourself a wife from there of
the daughters of Laban your mother’s brother.” Isaac don’t want Jacob to
marry a strange woman so he charged him to take a wife from his mother’s relatives
Gen 28:1-2
Father’s as a source of blessing:
There is a blessing that fathers carry and anything they say concerning you always
comes to past. Isaac pronounce a
blessing on his son Jacob. “May God Almighty bless you, and make you fruitful
and multiply you, that you may be an assembly of peoples;” Gen 28:3
“Therefore may God give you the dew of heaven, of the
fatness of the earth, and plenty of grain and wine. Let peoples serve you, and
nations bow down to you. Cursed be everyone who curses you, and blessed be
those who bless you!” Gen 27:28-29. So Jacob was indeed blessed.
Fathers as consultants & teachers:
Fathers’ serve as consultants on lot of issues because they have experience
more than we do and their input positively impact our lives. For instance in
Exodus 18:14-27, Moses Father-in-law guided him on how to lead. Moses was a consultant
for Israel, judging the whole Israel from morning to evening but when Jethro
saw the stress that he was going through, he told him to delicate some of his
responsibility to other respectable and God-fearing men so as to lighten his
yoke. That input from his father-in-law pleased him and he acted on it thus
making his work less difficult. This is the mark of a good father.
Fathers as caring and forgiving: fathers
are loving and caring, it is their wish to see their children always happy and
cared for. They have a big heart to forgive when their children disobey or
rebel against them. The prodigal son saw a need to return to his loving father
who always has been there for him.
No matter what has transpired between you and your father
it is time to reconcile with him. This is pleasing in the sight of God. It is
the will of God for fathers to be reconciled with their children. Your father
is already waiting for you…
“And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children,
and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth
with a curse.”
Malachi 4:6
A
Poem to a father:
Dad, as I was growing up,
You always made my world feel safe.
The dear calm of your voice, calmed me...
And the strong circle of your arms circled me.
I never felt vulnerable or afraid,
Because to me, you seemed unshakable.
As I got older, though,
It dawned on me that the world you faced everyday
Was a lot bigger and scarier
Than the one you had created for me.
And I wondered, sometimes, if you felt
Like relying on someone else’s strength for a change…
Now that I am an adult and living on
The outside of your safety net,
I finally understand what sacrifices
You made to make sure “my world”
Felt alright all the time.
Growing up in the sanctuary of your love
Is something
I will always cherish and a memory
I could never forget.
